You didn't go to the meeting with your guidance counselor." Clearly, he thought I was a temperamental child, or a stray animal in need of coaxing. "Taylor, wait, we need to talk." The calm, reasonable way he talked infuriated me. I grabbed my toast and left as fast as I could, but he called out before I could get out of the door. Neither of us wanted to talk to the other for fear of what might be said. Breakfast was awkward, as it had been for the last week.
